Wine O’Clock with Trizanne Barnard

We chat to the winemaker of Trizanne Signature Wines and Dawn Patrol Wines on IG Live and offer our readers a limited-edition, discounted mixed case.

In the second edition of Wine O’Clock, we chat to one of our favourite local winemakers, Trizanne Barnard. She’s an incredibly talented winemaker, previously part of the winemaking team at Klein Constantia, the ideal region for Sauvignon Blanc. Now with her own wine labels, TSW or Trizanne Signature Wines and Dawn Patrol Wines, she produces a small range of high-quality boutique wines. Diversity and attention to detail are part of her signature, as well as accessibility and an adventurous spirit.

By way of introduction, here are three things we love about Trizanne:
1.) She makes the most elegant cool-climate South African whites we have tasted in a long time.
2.) If you love a Syrah, she’s your woman. Her Reserve Syrah uses grapes from cool-climate, coastal Elim while her TSW comes from the much hotter Swartland, both bringing the best of Shiraz grapes from those regions and highlighting their unique terroirs.
3.) She’s a surfer and activist, using her label Dawn Patrol to give back by supporting Ocean Pledge with her wine sales, while also exploring sustainable packaging options like cans, with a lower carbon footprint.
4.) Ok we said three, but then we remembered her Rosé… if you love to drink pink, this is one of our Summer wines of choice. Easy drinking and easy on the pocket.

WINEMAKERS NOTES

Harvest started in the middle of February and continued for two weeks between the Helderberg and Bottelary hills. The Walker Bay and Elim grapes were harvested in the third week of February. The different Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon parcels were fermented separately after which they were left on the lees for a few months before meticulous blending took place. Bottling took place in June 2019.

TASTING NOTES

Vibrant and fresh nose of crushed rocks, ripe pear and passionfruit. Quite energetic on the palate which builds and has more profundity than one may first realize. Walks the tightrope between bracing Elim and Walker Bay freshness and ripe Stellenbosch fruit brilliantly. Finishes on a dry, clean and very classy note.

TSW Swartland Syrah 2019

WINEMAKING NOTES

Hand picked from 15 to 25-year-old dryland vines on Swartland Schist and Shale soils. Harvesting took place from middle to end of February. 100% destemmed and naturally fermented in open-top fermenters. Elevage took place in 500L French oak puncheons for 12 months.

TASTING NOTES

A youthful punch of red and black fruits on the nose with a delightfully savoury touch of black olive. That continues on the harmonious and well-weighted palate. A youthful, solid and (most importantly) delicious wine.

WINEMAKING NOTES

Harvest started in the second week of February and continued for two weeks. The different parcels were whole bunch pressed and fermented 100% in old oak French 500L and 225L barrels. Extended lees contact before blending. Partly natural fermented.

TASTING NOTES

Rich aromatics of lime, fresh pear, winter melon, hazelnuts and a touch of herbs. This intensity is continued on the palate with integrated flavours of fruit, spice and minerality: it is luxurious yet finely detailed. The elegance of the savoury finish is noticeable as the flavours vry slowly fade. A delicious, elegant wine that leaves the drinker refreshed.

TIM ATKIN REPORT 2019

94 Points:
Francis Pratt’s Berrio block supplies the fruit for this near equal blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, all naturally fermented in older wood. You can smell the sea in this fresh, saline, deftly balanced white that combines zing with subtle oak spices and lemon zest. 2019-25

Reserve Syrah 2018

R300 per bottle

WINEMAKING NOTES

Harvested from three vineyards in Elim, each from a different clone, on soils
varying from shale, gravel and Ferricrete also known as Koffieklip. The 2018
Syrah is a beautiful example of cool-climate Syrah and a great counterpoint to
the more commonly found warm-climate Syrah in South Africa. Minimal intervention was used during the winemaking process. After de-stemming, wine fermented naturally in open-top containers and benefitted from daily punch-downs. The

wine then spent 11 months in old 225L French oak and was bottled in February 2019. The wine was made in a natural way, with only sulphur additions.

TASTING NOTES

“Wild strawberries, cranberries, hints of pomegranate and crushed rose petals all neatly integrated with the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, a lovely saline/spicy thread throughout this Syrah that lends energy and tension towards the precise and detailed finish. This is a superb, sophisticated and nuanced Syrah that should age with style.

100% Syrah, 13.0% abv, Natural Cork Closure, W.O Elim

TIM ATKIN REPORT 2019

93 Points:
Trizanne Barnard makes this stylish, cool climate Syrah with grapes from Francis Pratt’s vineyard and the old Zoetendal site, which has evolved in style since she started picking earlier in 2016. Scented, balsamic and hauntingly spicy and peppery, it has scented 10% new oak, fine tannins and a salty finish.
