Bright shiny things: Spier Light Art 2024

Spier continues to support local art through its Spier Light Art exhibition, which illuminates the skies of Stellenbosch once again.

It’s that special time of year when Spier wine farm transforms its night skies into a dazzling spectacle! Make sure to mark your calendars because Stellenbosch’s beloved event, Spier Light Art, is back for its sixth installment. Igniting the darkness from March 1st to April 1st, 2024, visitors can bask in the glow of 21 unique light and video artworks scattered throughout the farm.

We suggest arriving just before dusk to indulge in an al fresco feast of food and wine beneath the warm summer sky. As night falls, the enchanting lights come to life, painting the surroundings with their mesmerizing hues.

Art holds a significant place at Spier. Not only does it boast one of the largest contemporary art collections in the country, but it also strives to make art accessible to all. That’s why this annual light art extravaganza is always free of charge – it’s a celebration of artists and their creations, offering each visitor a truly immersive experience with captivating artwork.

Art has a way of reflecting the world around us, and this rings true for the pieces showcased at Spier Light Art 2024. The participating artists tackle weighty themes such as environmental crises, the impact of technology on society, racial and colonial legacies, gender identity, and the quest for meaning in life.

Despite grappling with these profound ideas, the artists infuse their creations with a sense of lightness, encouraging interaction and introspection. Prepare to laugh, sigh, and ponder as you explore the diverse exhibits.

Curators Vaughn Sadie and Jay Pather promise yet another awe-inspiring art experience for visitors to the farm. They explain, “These works blend wonder, participation, and contemplation. This Light Art exhibition is a space for celebration, offering moments of escapism and reflection, bridging the gap between fantasy and reality.”

Let yourself be enveloped by vibrant colours and illuminations. Whether you stumble upon Stevie Thompson’s mesmerizing ‘Mycelium’ or Alan Alborough’s thought-provoking ‘ZZZZ,’ each artwork will spark curiosity and ignite your imagination.

Prepare to have your perspectives challenged as you contemplate issues like gender, race, and immigration. You may find yourself pondering the power of language or the pervasive influence of corporate advertising.

No matter the artwork that resonates with you, gear up for an immersive and captivating artistic journey unlike any other in South Africa. Bring along an open mind – and comfortable shoes – as you explore the installations scattered across the farm, and let Spier Light Art 2024 brighten your world.

P.S. Keep your ears close to the ground as some works are for sale after the show.
